"First, I couldn't understand what was on the screen.
It repeats video footage in which she is running
over the surface of an electric heater or glass
window with the tip of her tongue.
The image projected on the thick board of styrene is
a close-up so you might not realize that it's her tongue.
When her tongue touches the layer of grime or dirt on the
surface,you can find the part has been wiped.
We feel as if it were our own tongue touching them,
even though that isn't ours.
I felt like running to a rest room to gargle.
Let me talk about another work.
There is a color liquid crystal display which is as small
as two matchboxes just above a knee level on the wall in a
dark room.
The display shows an enlarged picture of a naked man on his
stomach under the ice of a skating-rink.
It was shot from overhead,and you can sometimes see the skater
skate on the naked man.
I shudder when I think the naked man is under the cold ice and
besides he has his body crossed by the sharp blades of the skates.
And one more work is a "Tempura Bra" or fried bra. The bra was
deep-fried after dipped in flour and mixed egg.
The artist from Holland is a 24-year-old woman. Although all her
works have no direct contact with us, they give us the feeling
that could burn our skins.
This exhibition is a part of artist initiative space or the group's
cross-fertilization-exhibition Puddles.
Kellie Smits is a person who was chosen among about 40 artists
who wanted to come to Japan from Holland.
They are not sort of works that make people feel comfortable,
but they appeal to the masochism hidden in everyone.
I wonder when we can see her works in Japan next.
I feel I'm going to have an irresistible habit."

"Kellie Smits maakte twee videoprodukties.
Het zijn korte registraties van eenvoudige maar ongewone handelingen,
zonder montage of beeldmanipulatie.
Centraal staat het lichaam als drager van ervaringen, gewaarwordingen
en interpretaties die het domein van de realiteit te buiten gaan.
De jury is onder de indruk van de sterke beelden, zoals het fresco van de
naakte man onder de ijsvloer en de terloopse manier waarop de schaatsijzers
daarover voortkrassen
In een wereld die in toenemende mate bepaald wordt door een visuele
stortvloed van websites, TV commercials en muziekvideo's ziet de jury
deze twee videowerken als kleine wonderen van eenvoud."
